Nationwide Monsoon Fully Begins... Jeju Up to 500mm by the Day After Tomorrow

Rainfall Begins in Jeju and Southern Regions
Expected to Spread Nationwide from the 28th

As the monsoon season officially begins this summer, heavy rain is expected nationwide.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 25th, a stationary front stretches from Shanghai, China to Jeju. The rain cloud band is moving northward toward South Korea, and the monsoon rain has already started in Jeju and the southern coast.

By 11 a.m. on the same day, about 80mm of rain had already fallen on Hallasan Mountain in Jeju. Particularly heavy rainfall is expected in the mountainous areas of Jeju and the southern coast. As the stationary front moves, the areas of heavy rain are expected to shift gradually.

Heavy rain is forecasted until night in Jeju, the southern coast, and near Jirisan Mountain. For Honam, Gyeongnam, northern inland Gyeongbuk, and central regions (excluding Gangwon Yeongdong), the main rainfall period is estimated to be from the afternoon of the 25th to the morning of the 26th, when a low-pressure system on the stationary front passes over the West Sea.

From the night of the 26th to the morning of the 27th, rain is expected to intensify again in the southern regions and Jeju. Hourly rainfall is expected to be around 40-60mm in Jeju, the southern coast, and Jirisan, and about 20-40mm in other areas.

The Korea Meteorological Administration particularly forecasts that more than 500mm of rain could fall in the mountainous areas of Jeju by the 27th. Overall, Jeju is expected to receive 100-300mm of rainfall.

Other regions are expected to see 80-150mm in Honam and Gyeongnam (with more than 200mm in the Jeolla coast, western southern coast of Gyeongnam, and near Jirisan), 30-100mm in Chungcheong, Gyeongbuk, the Seoul metropolitan area, inland Gangwon, Gangwon mountains, the five West Sea islands, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo (with more than 120mm in the western coast of Chungnam, southwestern inland Chungnam, and northern inland Gyeongbuk), and 10-50mm along the Gangwon East Coast.

This rain is expected to mark the official start of the monsoon season. From the 28th to the 1st of next month, rain is forecasted again nationwide due to the influence of the stationary front.
