Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Job Foundation held a preliminary orientation for participants (Sadaries) of the '2023 Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program' on the 23rd at the YBM Training Center in Hwaseong.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province stated at the orientation, "The policy reason for creating this program is social mobility, the ladder of class mobility," adding, "If the ladder of class mobility is broken, dynamism decreases, and the country collapses."
He continued, "Regardless of the color of your spoon, social mobility must occur frequently," and urged, "I hope even those with dirt spoons or no spoons at all have the courage to succeed."
He further said, "You, who have overcome tremendous competition to be here, should constantly try to find what you want to do over the next 3 to 4 weeks, and I hope you find happiness in every moment of that process," explaining, "Dreams can change continuously, and finding what you want to do is not easy. The Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program was created to help young people find what they want to do. I have a great attachment to this project, personally contributed ideas, and allocated the budget."
Moreover, he added, "Even if you don't find it, it doesn't matter. Don't be afraid to boldly confront and search for what you want to do. Dreams are found through many trials, errors, and failures," and emphasized, "You should not think of your expenses and scholarships as free. They are all funded by the taxpayers of the province. People you have never met have made considerations for you, so you should repay it someday. You can decide when and how to repay."
The Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program is Governor Kim Dong-yeon's flagship youth policy. It supports 200 young people in the province with overseas university study experiences, providing opportunities to reduce social disparities and explore diverse career paths.
Sadaries refers to the participants of the Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program, which started this year, with a total of 200 selected: 30 at the University of Michigan, 50 at the University at Buffalo, 40 at the University of Washington, 30 at the University of Sydney, and 50 at Fudan University.
For the four English-speaking universities, 4,682 applicants competed for 150 spots, resulting in a competition rate of 31 to 1.
Participants of the Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program will receive preliminary training from the 23rd to the 27th, starting with this orientation. The preliminary training includes ▲ team project planning and presentation ▲ university alumni special lectures and mentoring ▲ safety, culture, language, and CPR training ▲ sexual violence and harassment prevention education ▲ mission video production and editing training ▲ career counseling, among others.
Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Job Foundation will begin the full overseas training program next month according to each university's schedule after the preliminary training is completed.
