Bohae Brewery Highlights 'ESG Activities' in Celebration of Environment Month

As interest in ‘ESG management’ grows, more companies are making efforts to protect the environment and promote a sustainable society. A notable area of focus is activities related to the protection of marine ecosystems.

The ocean covers about 70% of the Earth's surface and is known to absorb carbon at a much faster rate than land.

It is a precious space that can absorb carbon, the main cause of global warming, most effectively, but the marine ecosystem itself is threatened as more than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year.

Since South Korea is surrounded by the sea on three sides, unique activities by companies related to the ocean are attracting attention.

Among them, we introduce representative local companies in the region that are engaged in marine environmental protection activities such as plogging, which involves picking up trash while walking.

Bohae Brewery Highlights 'ESG Activities' in Celebration of Environment Month

Bohae Brewery is carrying out the ‘SMALL ACTION’ campaign to protect the sea where the salt, a key ingredient of Bohae Soju, is harvested.

In May, they opened a pop-up store in Dongmyeong-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City to raise awareness about marine environmental protection and promote plogging.

Recently, about 30 members of the Gwangju running club ‘BGRC (BITGOEUL RUNNING CREW)’ visited the site and engaged in plogging around Dongmyeong-dong for about an hour.

On that day, they collected so much trash that they filled a 50-liter (ℓ) garbage bag, excluding recyclable paper and plastic.

In addition, various groups and individuals have participated in plogging, and there has been continuous interest and inquiries from environmentally conscious citizens.

The Bohae Soju Small Action Store offers an easy plogging experience for anyone and will be open until July 12.

In Mokpo, where Bohae Brewery’s headquarters are located, the Plogging Center & Small Action Store is emerging as a popular plogging spot.

Visitors can experience not only coastal plogging but also making upcycled goods, and the center will be open until the end of the year.

On May 31, in celebration of Sea Day, they held a plogging event with environmental activist and broadcaster Tyler Rasch, continuing efforts to widely promote the idea that small actions like picking up trash can save the ocean.
