Dongjak-gu Designates School Commute Routes and High-Complaint Areas as Smoke-Free Zones
Seoul Munchang Elementary School Commute Route and Area Near Sindaebang Samgeori Station Designated... Creating a Healthy Smoke-Free City
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) has designated the commute route to Seoul Munchang Elementary School in Sindaebang 1-dong and the area near Sindaebang Samgeori Station in Sindaebang 2-dong as smoke-free zones.
Munchang Elementary School is adjacent to Sindaebang Station on Line 2 and Boramae Park, and the area around Sindaebang Samgeori Station has large apartment complexes and public institutions, resulting in many complaints related to smoking due to heavy foot traffic.
Accordingly, the district conducted a resident survey with about 1,000 students and nearby residents last May and completed the designation of the smoke-free zones on the 15th of this month.
The newly designated smoke-free streets include ▲ part of Sindaebang 2-gil in Sindaebang 1-dong, 552 meters (from Exit 4 of Sindaebang Station to the main gate of Munchang Elementary School to the entrance of Boramae Park) and part of Sindaebang-gil, 104 meters ▲ and the 894-meter passageway around Exit 3 of Sindaebang Samgeori Station, Boramae Xi Apartments, and the Sindaebang 2-dong Community Service Center in Sindaebang 2-dong.
The district plans to actively promote the smoke-free zones by installing smoke-free street signs, banners, and information boards using security lights, as well as conducting campaigns with residents.
Furthermore, after an administrative notice and guidance period until September 14, a fine of 100,000 KRW will be imposed for smoking in the designated areas starting September 15.
In addition, to protect the health of children and adolescents and create a smoke-free environment, the district plans to expand smoke-free zones around school commute routes in cooperation with the Education Support Office.
Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, stated, “To realize a healthy city, improving residents’ awareness must accompany the designation and enforcement of smoke-free zones,” and added, “We ask for voluntary compliance and cooperation to create a pleasant environment free of cigarette smoke.”
