CJ CheilJedang "We Do Not Use Environmentally Harmful Packaging Materials"

Selected 6 Types Including PET-G for Negative List
"Realizing Sustainable Packaging Policy"

CJ CheilJedang announced on the 18th that it has selected environmentally harmful or difficult-to-recycle packaging materials as a 'negative list' and will not use them in product packaging.

The materials included in the negative list are six types in total: glycol-modified PET resin (PET-G), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), expanded polystyrene (EPS), polystyrene (PS), and colored glass bottle materials.

CJ CheilJedang explained that it plans to phase out the use of these materials, judging that they have a negative impact on the environment from a long-term perspective. The company also plans to disclose a roadmap later that includes specific goals such as the timing of discontinuing the use of the negative list materials and a global packaging strategy, after conducting technical reviews applicable to the products. Through this, it aims to secure sustainability in line with global standards such as overseas plastic regulations.

Along with this, to address the issue of microplastics remaining in the environment due to packaging materials, CJ CheilJedang plans to expand the use of its commercialized biodegradable material PHA under the brand name 'PHACT.' Using this material enables recycling, reuse, and composting of packaging.

The selection of the negative list is part of CJ CheilJedang's efforts to promote 'sustainable packaging,' one of its eight core strategies for sustainable management. Previously, CJ CheilJedang has not used oxo-degradable additives in all plastic packaging since 2019, discontinued the use of colored PET bottles and benzene-based inks since 2020, and stopped using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shrink labels in 2021.

A CJ CheilJedang official stated, "We will continue to minimize the amount of plastic and environmental pollution while prioritizing product quality and safety."
