Agricultural Technology Center Provides Urban Gardens (Gupyeong-dong·Yangho-dong)
Gumi City in Gyeongbuk has been operating public farms and urban gardens since 2021 to revitalize urban agriculture, and is nurturing urban agriculture talents through expert training courses and the Urban Agriculture Research Association.
The city has 374 plots at the Gupyung-dong Urban Agriculture Public Farm and 40 plots of urban gardens in Yangho-dong. Through this, green spaces are created within the city, allowing citizens to produce their own food and experience the joy of sharing, which has received great response.
The Gupyung-dong Urban Agriculture Public Farm, which has been operating for three years, is equipped with convenience facilities such as restrooms, irrigation facilities, parking lots, and resting areas, as well as a pet shelter for citizens visiting with their companion animals.
Additionally, an animal farm (chickens, rabbits, cats, etc.) has been established where children can interact with animals, making it a hot place enjoyed by both children and adults, and it has become a place for citizens to communicate and heal.
The urban gardens in Yangho-dong are supported by urban agriculture managers who have completed expert training courses at the Agricultural Technology Center, helping novice farmers manage their gardens. Priority is given to families with elementary school children to teach the value of agriculture through horticulture to children.
Kim Young-hyuk, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “We plan to create small-scale gardens in various areas so that many citizens can use urban gardens nearby. We expect that urban gardens will become a part of citizens’ lives and a green caf? like oxygen in the future.”
