Real-time Camera Capture and Comparison with ID Card
Shinhan Card is introducing a feature that allows users to verify their identity by showing their face to the smartphone camera when applying for a card through the mobile application (app).
On the 14th, Shinhan Card announced that it is the first in the card industry to launch this "facial recognition non-face-to-face real-name authentication" service.
This service verifies the user’s identity by comparing the existing ID photo with real-time facial video using a facial recognition algorithm when applying for a card through the mobile app. When applying for a card on the Shinhan Play app, after verifying the ID, users can choose facial authentication, enabling identity verification solely through facial video via the phone camera without any additional preparation.
To prevent video editing, a "liveness detection" technology has been introduced, which instructs simple movements during face capture to confirm whether the person is being recorded in real time.
This service has been designated as an innovative financial service by the Financial Services Commission and is being piloted for existing Shinhan Card members.
Meanwhile, Shinhan Card has also received designation from the Financial Services Commission for its facial recognition payment service, ‘Shinhan Face Pay,’ which is currently being offered.
A Shinhan Card official stated, "Biometric authentication methods such as facial recognition are difficult to forge and do not require carrying separate authentication devices, making them optimal for non-face-to-face financial transactions. Going forward, we will apply facial authentication not only to card applications but also to various non-face-to-face financial services to provide safe and convenient non-face-to-face financial services."
