Patrol Security Drone Real-World Test in Goheung Island Area 'Smooth Sailing'

Focus Inspection on Operation of Mounted Equipment and Operating Systems

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 8th that it has completed the 4th main demonstration of the "Island Area Security Drone Operation Integrated System Development Project."

The Island Area Security Drone Operation Integrated System Development Project aims to develop drones and operation systems capable of continuous patrols and initial response in emergency situations in island areas without police stations.

The project is led by Suncheon National University, with joint participation from the Jeollanam-do Autonomous Police Committee, Jeollanam-do Police Agency, Gohung Police Station, Korean Air, and Jeonnam Technopark.

In this demonstration, the operation of key functions of the security drone’s onboard equipment (such as warning lights, searchlights, daytime and thermal cameras) developed in-house was checked, and it was confirmed whether the footage captured by the drone was properly transmitted to the Gohung-gun control center.

In particular, the real-time transmission of drone footage to the county control center’s screen marks the final stage of the project, and after several more demonstrations, the security drones are planned to be deployed in island security sites.

A county official stated, “Thanks to the active cooperation of residents of Sang-Hwado and Ha-Hwado in Doyang-eup and Deukryangdo, as well as the efforts of related organizations participating in the project, we have smoothly reached the final stage of the project,” adding, “We hope to complete the project without any setbacks in the remaining two months and see security drones utilized in island areas nationwide.”

Meanwhile, following the drone demonstration city, Gohung-gun, which is steadily establishing its position up to the K-UAM (Korean Urban Air Mobility) demonstration, will from August create the nation’s only UAM (Urban Air Mobility) testbed. Seven consortia involving 46 domestic institutions and companies, including Korean Air, SKT, Hanwha Systems, Hyundai Motor Company, and Daewoo Construction, will demonstrate UAM aircraft developed by major domestic and international corporations.

Additionally, to secure a lead in the “Gohung-type UAM Tourism Commercialization” linked with the South Coast tourism belt, Gohung-gun is currently conducting a route establishment planning research project together with Jeollanam-do and Korean Air.
