Shinan-gun Holds Planning Service Report Meeting for Commercialization of Tidal Power and Development of Floating Technology

Plan to Propose to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Using the Project Report

Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) announced on the 8th that it held the ‘Tidal Power Commercialization and Floating Technology Development Planning Service Report Meeting’ with the attendance of related officials including Lee Jin-hak, Deputy Director of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, and Park Jin-soon, Head of the Uldolmok Base.

Due to the regional characteristics of the Shinan-gun Dadohae area, where tidal differences range from 3 to 4 meters and strong tidal currents flow through developed waterways, there are numerous candidate sites for tidal power generation. The plan aims to produce clean energy using this tidal energy and respond to international climate change.

Additionally, through the tidal power commercialization and floating technology development planning service, the optimal sites for tidal power generation will be selected, and vertical-axis tidal power generation systems, which are commercialized and operated in the domestic Uldolmok waters, will be distributed and commercialized.

In particular, this service involves preparing a planning report for the development of MW-class floating tidal power generation system technology applicable to waters with depths over 40 meters around Shinan-gun. This planning report will be utilized to make recommendations to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “Our county has 1,025 islands, allowing tidal power generation between islands, and the tidal energy density exceeds 3 MWh/㎡, which is very superior compared to other waters. Shinan-gun plans to take the lead in developing tidal power generation systems by utilizing these resources.”

Meanwhile, Shinan-gun is promoting 1.8 GW of solar power generation and is currently paying sunlight pensions for 600 MW in commercial operation. Furthermore, it is planning to establish the world’s largest offshore wind power complex with a capacity of 8.2 GW, and is pursuing a floating offshore wind potential of 10 GW, with plans to provide wind pensions to all residents of the county.
