Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced that it is operating the ‘Cheongja Kiln Site Experience Center,’ where visitors can experience various ceramic activities such as wheel throwing, hand building, and painting.
The Cheongja Kiln Site Experience Center was modeled after the Buncheong ware kiln site in Suyu-dong, which is designated as a Seoul Metropolitan City Monument. To promote the cultural value of over 20 kiln sites discovered in the Suyu-dong and Ui-dong areas, the district established this experience center and has been offering various ceramic experience programs to residents and visitors since May 11.
The Cheongja Kiln Site Experience Center is divided into an exhibition experience hall and an outdoor learning area. The exhibition experience hall is a two-story building with a total floor area of 154.94㎡, where experience programs are conducted and artifacts excavated from the kiln sites in Suyu-dong and Ui-dong are displayed. The outdoor learning area also operates daily and regular ceramic experience programs, and a kiln model modeled after a traditional kiln is installed next to the outdoor learning area.
The district operates ceramic experience programs divided into regular classes held once a week for one month and one-day experience classes.
The regular classes include ▲ Clay Play and Color Play (for preschool children, Saturdays 10:00 AM?11:30 AM) ▲ Clay Play with the Forest (for elementary students, Saturdays 1:00 PM?2:30 PM) ▲ Healing Pottery (for adults, Fridays 7:00 PM?8:30 PM, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 2:00 PM?3:30 PM). The one-day experience classes include ▲ Elementary Class (Saturdays 3:00 PM?4:30 PM) ▲ Family Class (Sundays 1:00 PM?2:30 PM) ▲ Adult Class (Sundays 3:00 PM?4:30 PM) ▲ Group Class (Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 10:00 AM?11:30 AM).
Participants can create their own ceramics through wheel throwing and bisque plate painting. The tuition fee for regular classes ranges from 40,000 to 60,000 KRW per month, and the one-day experience classes cost between 10,000 and 13,000 KRW per session. Completed ceramics are fired by the experience center staff and shipped by courier approximately 30 days after the completion date.
Citizens wishing to participate in ceramic experiences can apply through the Cheongja Kiln Site Experience Center reservation system website. Applications open at 10:00 AM on the 10th of the previous month. For example, reservations for the July program open at 10:00 AM on June 10.
The experience center operates from Wednesday to Sunday every week. Mondays are reserved for kiln firing and bisque work, and Tuesdays are regular closed days.
