Presidential Office: "Han Likely to Be Elected as Non-Permanent Member of UN Security Council"

UN General Assembly Held Today to Conduct Elections
Opportunity to Realize Vision of a Global Hub Nation

The Presidential Office stated on the 6th that "it appears highly likely that our country will be elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the third time."

Lee Do-woon, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, said at the Yongsan Presidential Office in the afternoon, "The UN General Assembly will be held at 11 p.m. tonight, and the election for non-permanent members of the Security Council will take place."

He added, "If our country is elected as a non-permanent member, it will be the third time following 2013-2014 and 1996-1997," emphasizing, "Re-entering as a non-permanent member will be a very important opportunity to realize the vision of becoming a global pivotal country contributing to freedom, peace, and prosperity in the international community."

He also said, "As a party to the Korean Peninsula, we expect this to be an opportunity to contribute to the Security Council's active response to North Korea's nuclear and missile development and to participate in taking necessary measures."

The United Nations will hold the election for non-permanent members of the Security Council for the 2024-2025 term at 11 p.m. Korea time at the UN Headquarters in New York.

One country from the Asia-Pacific region, two from Africa, two from Latin America, and one from Eastern Europe will be elected respectively. Since Korea is the sole candidate from the Asia-Pacific region, its election as a non-permanent member is considered certain.
