Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held a ‘Carbon Neutral Campaign’ on the 5th at the Jungnangcheon riverside near Jangpyeonggyo Bridge together with the Dongdaemun-gu 2050 Carbon Neutral Citizen Action Group in celebration of Environment Day, planting ‘Kenaf’ and engaging residents visiting Jungnangcheon No.1 Sports Park.
Since declaring its commitment to becoming a ‘Carbon Neutral City’ in February, Dongdaemun-gu has been carrying out activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in daily life. On this day, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung and 50 members of the Carbon Neutral Citizen Action Group planted ‘Kenaf,’ known as an air-purifying plant with significantly higher carbon dioxide absorption and oxygen emission compared to other plants, along the popular Jungnangcheon walking trail frequented by residents.
After planting Kenaf, Mayor Lee and the Citizen Action Group conducted ‘EM Mudball Throwing’ into Jungnangcheon. The ‘EM Mudballs,’ made by mixing beneficial microorganism culture solution with loess, have the effect of decomposing harmful substances, purifying water quality, and removing odors.
At Jungnangcheon No.1 Sports Park, the ‘2023 Environment Day Carbon Neutral Campaign’ was held, operating experience booths (EM Mudball Throwing, Energy OX Quiz) and promotional booths (EM Fermentation Solution Information, Eco Mileage Promotion) to build community consensus on carbon neutrality. As a side event, the winning works of the ‘Environment Day Character Contest’ held for Dongdaemun-gu youth climate and environment guardians were selected by direct voting from residents participating in the campaign.
Mayor Lee Pil-hyung, who visited the campaign site, said, “I believe that small daily practices to reduce greenhouse gases will accumulate and help overcome the climate crisis,” and added, “Let’s create a carbon-neutral future city, Dongdaemun-gu, together.”
