"Where Are the Legs? It's Soybean Paste Residue" Bug Floating Spicy Fish Stew

Complaint Post on Tourist Community About Visitors to Jindo, Jeonnam
Restaurant Owner Refutes Saying "It's Doenjang, Not Bugs"
Business Suspension Possible if Bugs Found in Food

Controversy has arisen after claims that dozens of bugs were found in the spicy fish stew at a sashimi restaurant located in Jindo, Jeollanam-do.

On the 4th, a post titled "The Worst Sashimi Restaurant of My Life in Front of a Lodging in Jindo" was uploaded on an online community.

The author, Mr. A, stated, "I came to Jindo for a trip and ordered sashimi and spicy fish stew to go from a nearby sashimi restaurant, but dozens of bugs were found," attaching photos.

The photo shows foreign substances presumed to be bugs floating in the spicy fish stew broth.

Mr. A said, "That’s just roughly what we scooped out; there were more inside the stew," adding, "Even when we went to the restaurant to show them directly, they never admitted it was bugs and insisted it was just soybean paste residue."

According to Mr. A, the restaurant owner reportedly said upon seeing the foreign substances, "Where are the legs?" and "I don’t see any."

Mr. A added, "Since we insisted they were bugs, they only refunded the spicy fish stew," and "We have officially filed complaints with the Jindo County Office and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety."

Netizens responded with comments such as, "You can see the legs even without a magnifying glass," and "If such bugs came out of food, it must be reported for the sake of other residents and travelers."

If Foreign Substances Are Found in a Restaurant, Take Photos and Preserve Evidence

Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, if foreign substances such as hair or small bugs are detected in food for the first time, a corrective order is issued.

Upon a second detection, a 2-day business suspension is imposed, and a third detection results in a 3-day business suspension.

If dangerous foreign substances such as metal or glass are found, a 2-day business suspension is imposed from the first detection, 5 days for the second, and 10 days for the third.

In April, a live cockroach was found in a cola sold at a Lotteria store, resulting in a 5-day business suspension for that store.

If foreign substances are found in food, first take photos, then carefully store the foreign substances in a zipper bag or airtight container for submission to investigative agencies.

Afterward, you can report the incident by phone or through the website to the relevant business or the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (1399).
