Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, held a resolution rally on June 3rd at Yeongyang Public Stadium with local soccer players to support the attraction of a pumped-storage power plant to Yeongyang-gun.
This event was organized mainly by local soccer players who hope to attract the long-awaited pumped-storage power project while hosting the 36th Yeongyang County Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament. On this day, about 400 people gathered, including County Governor O Do-chang, provincial and county council members, the president of the Yeongyang Sports Association, heads of sports associations from each town and township, leaders of local social organizations, and players from six town and township soccer representative teams, to pledge their commitment to attracting the pumped-storage power plant with the hopes of the local sports community.
If the pumped-storage power plant is established, Yeongyang-gun will see an investment of 2 trillion won in construction costs funded by the national government for a facility with a capacity of 1000 MW, which will boost the local economy. Additionally, the region will secure 50 billion won in development support funds and 1.4 billion won annually in local tax revenue. As Yeongyang-gun is classified as a region at risk of population extinction, various sectors of society earnestly hope for the attraction of the pumped-storage power plant as the last hope for the area.
At the event, Yeongyang County Governor O Do-chang stated, “Attracting the pumped-storage power plant is Yeongyang-gun’s last hope and is not a choice but a matter of survival. Therefore, I ask all residents of Yeongyang-gun to do their best to support the attraction of the pumped-storage power plant.”
Kwon Do-won, president of the Yeongyang-gun Football Association, which organized the event, said, “I hope this event will help attract the pumped-storage power plant, a long-standing project for Yeongyang-gun, and moving forward, local soccer players will unite and devote themselves to the effort to attract the pumped-storage power plant.”
