A Monk from a Prestigious University with Two Kids? Publisher Also 'Cuts Ties'

Active as an essayist, author, and broadcaster
Publisher: "Settled with advance payments and book destruction refunds"

A monk, a graduate of a prestigious university who had published several books as an essayist and appeared on broadcasts, has been suspected of being the father of two children. In response, a publishing company that had an exclusive contract with the monk decided to terminate the contract and destroy the books.

On the 2nd, S Publishing stated during an interview with Chosun.com regarding Monk A, who faced allegations related to his private life, "As a result of consultations with the monk, the books have been discontinued, and the exclusive author management contract has been terminated." The publisher added, "All advance payments made under the contract and the costs for destroying the books have been fully refunded," and requested, "Please direct any further inquiries to Monk A himself." The books by Monk A published last year by S Publishing are currently marked as 'out of print' or have disappeared entirely from sales listings depending on the retailer.

Monk A is suspected of having fathered children after ordination in the Jogye Order, which prohibits marriage. According to an anonymous informant, Monk A initially joined a small Buddhist sect that permits marriage, married a woman from the same sect, and had his first child. Later, wishing to transfer to the Jogye Order, Monk A asked his wife for a sham divorce. Trusting the monk’s promise to provide child support and living expenses, the wife agreed to the divorce.

Even after transferring to the Jogye Order, Monk A continued to meet with his wife and had a second child. However, he later demanded a formal divorce instead of the sham divorce. The informant claims that Monk A’s two children are growing up without knowing who their father is.

Monk A is known for having left university to become a monk just one year after enrolling at a prestigious university. Based on his experience balancing academic studies and spiritual practice, he authored several books. He has also taught energy meditation, mindfulness, and Zen meditation at external organizations and meditation centers, and actively communicated with the public through his YouTube channel and social media platforms. Recently, he even appeared on a morning program’s singing contest segment on a broadcasting station.
