Modunia Farm, an insect farm located in Inbo-ri, Duseo-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan City, has been designated as a 'Workplace Learning (WPL)' site by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Modunia Farm has been breeding brown mealworms in Inbo-ri, Duseo-myeon since 2016 and produces various products using edible insects as raw materials.
The Workplace Learning site is an education program where leading farmers directly transfer specialized skills and core know-how by item on-site, allowing young and emerging farmers to quickly acquire advanced farming techniques.
Modunia was finally selected as a Workplace Learning site on the 22nd after a total of four rounds of selection screening.
Starting in the second half of this year, the farm plans to conduct practical, field-oriented training for farms interested in breeding edible insects, supported by a budget for education operation.
Modunia Farm officials are taking a group photo to commemorate the designation of the on-site training center.
An official from Ulju-gun stated, “The designation of Modunia Farm as a Workplace Learning site will help develop Ulju-gun’s insect industry into a future high value-added industry, significantly contribute to changing perceptions about edible insects, and foster specialized talent in the insect industry field.”
Currently, ten species of edible insects are registered as food ingredients in Korea and are used as alternative proteins and materials for health functional foods. The insect industry, including feed, educational, and pet uses, is emerging as a future new growth engine industry.
