American Man Who Slipped at Burger King to Receive 10 Billion Won in Compensation

Burger King "Amount is excessive" announces intention to appeal

A U.S. court has ruled that the headquarters of fast-food chain Burger King must pay approximately $8 million (about 10.5 billion KRW) in damages to a man who suffered serious injuries after slipping at one of its stores.

According to the New York Post and other outlets on the 25th (local time), Richard Tulecki (48) slipped on a wet foreign substance on the floor near the restroom of a Burger King store in Florida, injuring his back. He later underwent surgery, but a perforation occurred in his colon after the operation. Ultimately, he filed a lawsuit against Burger King.

The jury found Burger King liable. They ordered Burger King to pay a total of $7.8 million, including $700,000 for medical expenses, $1 million for past and present pain and suffering, about $2.77 million for future pain and suffering, and about $3.35 million for future loss of earning capacity.

Tulecki’s attorney stated, "Tulecki has endured tremendous hardship due to Burger King’s negligence," adding, "No verdict can undo this damage, but it will provide him and his family with resources to move forward."

However, Burger King is reportedly planning to appeal the verdict, arguing that the $7.8 million compensation is excessive.

Earlier this month, a couple in Florida filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s seeking about 20 million KRW in damages after their daughter suffered burns on her thigh from hot McNuggets (chicken nuggets).

McDonald’s, however, denied the couple’s claims. The McDonald’s legal team issued a statement saying, "We have thoroughly reviewed this matter and respectfully disagree with the plaintiff’s claims as we followed our policies and procedures properly."
