'Super Typhoon' Mawar Strikes... Hundreds of Korean Travelers Stranded in Guam

Major Travel Agency Package Customers
Partial Support Policy for Accommodation and More

As the "super typhoon" Mawar passed through Guam, it has been confirmed that hundreds of Korean travelers who had traveled to Guam and nearby Saipan are stranded.

According to Hanatour on the 25th, about 230 people who took package tours to Guam and Saipan using the company's products were unable to return on the scheduled date. According to a Hanatour official, the situation in Guam is serious, and there is a possibility that the airport will be closed until the 1st of next month.


Hanatour plans to provide travelers with accommodation support of 100,000 won per night according to internal regulations. Modetour also has about 160 travelers staying locally, including about 120 in Guam and about 40 in Saipan. Modetour plans to provide $150 per team (per room).


Interpark also pays 100,000 won per room daily to travelers who went to the area using the company's products, regardless of the length of stay. Additional support is also under consideration. The number of people staying in Guam who departed through Interpark is 58.


In addition, Norangpungseon has 125 travelers staying locally, including 48 in Guam and 77 in Saipan, and Chamjoeun Travel has confirmed that 156 travelers are stranded, including 73 in Guam and 83 in Saipan. These travel agencies are also considering some support.


According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9 a.m. on this day, Typhoon Mawar passed about 180 km northwest by north of Guam at sea. Typhoon Mawar is expected to become a "super strong typhoon" with a central pressure of 915 hPa (hectopascal) and a maximum wind speed of 55 m/s as it passes through waters with a sea temperature above 30 degrees about 650 km northwest by north of Guam at 9 a.m. on the 26th.


Mawar is expected to be the strongest typhoon approaching Guam in decades.
