Daegu City to Invest 3.8 Billion Won in Building the 'Blockchain Technology Innovation Center'

Daegu City was finally selected on the 24th for the ‘2023 Regional Blockchain Technology Innovation Support Center’ construction project announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT (Korea Internet & Security Agency) targeting local governments nationwide.

Daegu City has designated ABB (AI, Blockchain, Big Data) as a future core industry in the 8th local government administration, established a dedicated department (July 22, 2022), and is focusing on fostering the industry by securing a budget of 7.8 billion KRW in 2023 for blockchain technology acquisition.

Following the selection through the public contest, Daegu City will invest 3.8 billion KRW to establish the Blockchain Technology Innovation Support Center (hereinafter referred to as the Support Center) on the 2nd floor of the Smart City Center in Suseong Alpha City, which will serve as the control tower for fostering the blockchain industry.

The Support Center aims to secure a central hub for regional innovation that can lead blockchain technology. On the 24th, Daegu City, Korea Internet & Security Agency, and Daegu Digital Innovation Promotion Agency signed a business agreement and plan to proceed in earnest.

The Support Center plans to systematically support the regional blockchain industry from A to Z, including blockchain development infrastructure and platform construction, discovering blockchain services fused with regional specialized industries, blockchain convergence technology development and consulting support, and providing space for blockchain companies, quality testing, and certification support.

Ryu Dong-hyun, head of Daegu City’s AI Blockchain Division, said, “Among the ABB future strategies, A (AI, Artificial Intelligence) took the first step with the selection of the AI-based Process Innovation Simulation Center construction project (total research budget of 25.8 billion KRW). The second step, the Blockchain (B) industry fostering project through the Blockchain Technology Innovation Support Center, has been selected, so the puzzle of fostering ABB future strategic industries is being put together one by one.”

Going forward, Daegu City plans to complete the blockchain ecosystem through industry-academia-research cooperation with 24 blockchain companies participating in the project, universities and local research institutes possessing core technologies, based on the demonstration experience of blockchain citizen experience services (DaeguID, D-Mile) and strong policy will.

Choi Un-baek, head of the Future Innovation Growth Office of the city, emphasized the commitment to fostering the blockchain industry, saying, “We will continuously support the Blockchain Technology Innovation Support Center so that it can develop into a growth hub for regional innovation, such as discovering convergence services linked to local industries.”
