First Time Since Implementation in 2005
Secured Special Local Tax of 80 Million Won
Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, was selected as an excellent institution for the first time since the disaster management evaluation was conducted in 2023, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The disaster management evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of each institution's disaster safety performance from the previous year based on the "Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety." Yeongyang-gun achieved the remarkable feat of being selected as an excellent institution for the first time since the evaluation began in 2005, and is expected to receive incentives such as a special treasury grant of 80 million KRW, a reward of 4 million KRW, and a ministerial citation.
The county received high scores in evaluation categories including disaster management fund management performance, disaster safety education, summer natural disaster preparedness inspections, maintenance of response systems for disaster situation management, securing disaster relief infrastructure and training performance, and recovery project management capabilities. In particular, its selection as an excellent institution in the 2022 Disaster Response Safety Korea Drill was also highly recognized.
Over the past year, Yeongyang-gun has promoted projects such as river branch stream restoration and hazardous road maintenance to prevent large-scale disasters, expanded the citizen safety insurance annually, and established a proactive response system for citizen safety by building systems utilizing Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including an early warning system. A county official explained that all these efforts seem to have resulted in this achievement.
County Governor O Do-chang said, “The first time is important in everything,” and added, “We will do our best to modernize the county’s disaster safety management system by thoroughly improving insufficient indicators to strengthen disaster management capabilities and practically realize a safe daily life for residents.”
