U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a summit meeting one day before the opening of the Group of Seven (G7) Hiroshima Summit and agreed to strengthen cooperation in cutting-edge technology fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI).

According to local media on the 18th, the strengthening of U.S.-Japan cooperation in advanced technology sectors is also aimed at countering China, which is economically reinforcing its hegemonism.

At this summit, it was reported that the scope of cooperation in cutting-edge technology fields will be expanded to enhance collaboration in AI and biotechnology, and also to cooperate in talent development and startups, including the energy sector. The U.S. and Japan have been jointly developing semiconductors and quantum computers.

Prime Minister Kishida stated in his opening remarks, "The U.S.-Japan alliance is the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region," adding, "The U.S.-Japan relationship is not limited to security but is a multilayered and robust cooperative relationship across all fields." He further cited the example of the American semiconductor company Micron, which is actively engaged in advanced semiconductor research and development (R&D) and manufacturing in Hiroshima, as evidence of remarkable progress in U.S.-Japan economic cooperation.

President Biden also responded in his opening remarks, "Under Japan's leadership, we have already made progress on this year's G7 agenda." He emphasized that the U.S. and Japan share common views on holding Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine, defending Ukraine's territorial integrity, nuclear non-proliferation, and realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.
