On the 17th, Pohang City attended the strategic presentation evaluation for the National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex held at Seoul Square and explained the rationale for designating Pohang as a specialized complex for secondary batteries.

At this presentation, the city emphasized that Pohang must be designated as a secondary battery specialized complex by highlighting its strengths, including being the global leader in cathode material production, completing the only full-cycle corporate value chain for cathode materials in Korea, and hosting large-scale global leading companies in the related sector.

On the day, Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang, who is currently undergoing follow-up treatment after recent cancer surgery, visited the presentation venue and carefully oversaw the secondary battery specialized complex strategy presentation, which he has been fully committed to.

In particular, before the presentation, Mayor Lee actively communicated with Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongbuk Province, who was present, and agreed to continue cooperating until the end to attract the secondary battery specialized complex that will be responsible for the future growth engines of Pohang and Gyeongbuk.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “Pohang is the optimal location for a secondary battery specialized complex, with a concentration of global secondary battery material companies such as EcoPro and POSCO Future M, and all the infrastructure including technology, talent, and facilities in place. Together with Gyeongbuk Province, we will definitely attract the secondary battery specialized complex to Pohang and contribute to securing Korea’s global super-gap competitiveness in the secondary battery industry.”

The secondary battery specialized complex will have its final candidate sites announced around June by the National Advanced Strategic Industry Committee after government review following presentations by each local government.
