Yangcheon-gu Mayor Lee Gijae Conducts On-site Inspection of Sinwol Rainwater Storage and Drainage Facility

Lee Gijae, Yangcheon District Mayor, visited the Sinwol rainwater storage and drainage facility on the afternoon of the 15th to inspect the facility in order to prevent urban flooding caused by heavy rain ahead of the summer rainy season.

The Sinwol rainwater storage and drainage facility is the first rainwater tunnel-type disaster prevention facility in Korea, built to overcome continuous flood damage in the Sinwol-dong area from 2010 to 2012.

It can store up to 320,000 tons of rainwater, storing rainwater 40 meters underground while simultaneously managing drainage. Since the completion of the facility, not a single case of road flooding or house flooding caused by sewer backflow occurred even during the record-breaking heavy rain last year.

On this day, Mayor Lee personally inspected the 40-meter-deep tunnel with the on-site manager, carefully checking the hourly rainfall capacity, as well as any supplementary and improvement measures, urging thorough safety management without any gaps.

Following this, Mayor Lee attended the ‘2023 Summer Flood and Wind Disaster Preparedness Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters Opening Ceremony’ held at the district office’s disaster safety countermeasures situation room, where he received a report on the safety management plan.

The district will enter a 24-hour emergency duty system for five months from May 15 to October 15, implementing prepared plans for prevention, response, and recovery against summer typhoons and heavy rain.
