Korea Elevator Safety Agency Collects Over 850 Used Batteries in One Month

The Korea Elevator Safety Agency is launching the ‘Elevator Waste Battery Resource Circulation Project’ to collect waste batteries generated from elevators, preventing environmental pollution and recycling resources. Accordingly, the collection of waste batteries that have been left unattended in elevator pits without proper disposal procedures is expected to be actively carried out.

The Korea Elevator Safety Agency Gyeonggi-Gangwon Regional Headquarters is conducting a collection operation of used batteries for elevators together with maintenance companies.

To prevent environmental pollution and recycle resources, and to practice ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, the Elevator Safety Agency announced on the 16th that it signed a business agreement with the Korea Environment Corporation on March 28 and conducted a one-month waste battery collection project.

Centered on the Gyeonggi-Gangwon Regional Headquarters of the Elevator Safety Agency, seven branch offices and 17 maintenance companies participated, collecting over 850 waste batteries weighing 1.3 tons within a month, which were then handed over to a specialized company.

The collected waste batteries are processed by specialized companies that refine lead from the storage batteries to recycle it as raw material for batteries, while hazardous substances are properly disposed of.

Meanwhile, the Elevator Safety Agency plans to expand the waste battery collection project for elevators nationwide through collaboration with the Korea Environment Corporation, developing it into a successful ESG management model for public institutions aimed at preventing environmental pollution and promoting resource circulation.

Lee Chang-yong, head of the Gyeonggi-Gangwon Regional Headquarters of the Elevator Safety Agency, said, “We will strive to contribute to ESG management by collecting and properly disposing of waste batteries generated from elevators to prevent environmental pollution.”
