"By the End of the Century, Coffee Cultivation Areas to Decrease by 54.4% Due to Climate Change"

Coffee Farms Likely to Be Directly Hit by Climate Crisis
UK Relief Organization 'Christian Aid' Releases Report

A research report has revealed that even if the global temperature rise is kept below 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, more than half of the world's coffee-growing areas could disappear due to climate change.

According to German news agency dpa on the 14th (local time), the UK relief organization 'Christian Aid' stated in a report released that day that even if the global average temperature rise is limited to 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels, up to 54.4% of land suitable for coffee cultivation could vanish.

The report pointed out that abnormal climate phenomena such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, droughts, and landslides in coffee-producing regions like Africa and South America could shrink the global coffee industry and increase poverty among farming households.

Yadira Lemus, a coffee producer from Honduras, said, "Coffee used to be a plant that would grow on its own once planted, so this is definitely related to climate change," adding, "Temperatures keep rising, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict the weather." She continued, "In the past, we could tell whether it was winter or summer and when to plant seedlings, but now each year is different and unpredictable, so that is no longer possible."

The report emphasized that developed country governments must support farming households in underdeveloped countries that are directly hit by the climate crisis. Itna Tekalnew, the Ethiopia representative of the organization, said, "Africa accounts for 17% of the world's population but emits only 4% of the greenhouse gases that cause the climate crisis. However, Africa is the one suffering from the impacts of the climate crisis."
