Samsung Electronics Develops Industry's First 'CXL 2.0 DRAM'

'Memory Pooling' Support... Server Operating Cost Reduction
Mass Production Planned Within the Year
Continuous Collaboration with Data Center, Server, and Chipset Companies

Samsung Electronics announced on the 12th that it has developed the industry's first 128GB CXL DRAM supporting CXL (Compute Express Link) 2.0.

Following the world's first development of CXL DRAM based on CXL 1.1 in May last year, Samsung Electronics has developed a 128GB DRAM supporting CXL 2.0 within a year.

This product supports PCIe 5.0 (x8 lanes) and provides a maximum bandwidth of 35GB/s. Samsung Electronics plans to mass-produce the 'CXL 2.0 DRAM' within this year and accelerate the expansion of the CXL ecosystem by introducing products with various capacities according to the demand of the next-generation computing market.

CXL DRAM can coexist with main DRAM while expanding bandwidth and capacity, attracting attention in the next-generation computing market where high-speed data processing such as artificial intelligence and machine learning is required.

Samsung Electronics' 'CXL 2.0 DRAM' is the industry's first to support the 'memory pooling' function. 'Memory pooling' is a technology that creates a pool by grouping multiple CXL memories on a server platform, allowing multiple hosts to share memory from the pool as needed. This technology enables the full capacity of CXL memory to be used without idle areas. When customers apply this technology to data centers, more efficient memory usage is possible, reducing server operating costs. It is also expected that the saved operating costs will be reinvested in server memory, creating a virtuous cycle.

Choi Jang-seok, Executive Vice President and Head of New Business Planning Team at Samsung Electronics Memory Business Division, said, "Samsung Electronics is leading CXL technology as a member of the CXL Consortium's Board of Directors (BoD). We will further expand the CXL ecosystem through cooperation with global companies in data centers, servers, and chipsets."
