"Election Is Not for Personal Honor Restoration," Advice Given
Jeong Seong-ho, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed a cautious stance on the speculation about former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk running in the general election on the 11th, saying, "Running is his own freedom," but added, "Since he has not expressed his intention to run, such predictions are inappropriate."
In an interview with YTN Radio's 'Shin Yul's News Face-off' on the afternoon of the same day, Rep. Jeong said, "If former Minister Cho applies for nomination, it would be a matter to be decided according to the party's constitution and regulations."
Rep. Jeong said, "An election is not a process for an individual to restore their honor," and added, "Since former Minister Cho is currently on trial, I think it is a priority for him to focus on the trial and restore his honor through it." Former Minister Cho, who was indicted on charges including his children's school admission fraud, was found guilty in the first trial, and the second trial is currently underway.
Rep. Jeong said, "A presidential election is an evaluation of the previous administration," and added, "So, didn't the public show various divisions related to former Minister Cho, who was the most central and notable minister in the previous administration?" He continued, "I think he should seriously consider such issues when deciding whether to apply for nomination."
When the host asked, "There are concerns that if former Minister Cho runs, the so-called 'Cho Kuk incident' of 2019 might be repeated," Rep. Jeong replied, "Former Minister Cho is a very wise person, so he will consider such aspects." Rep. Jeong explained, "If former Minister Cho runs, it would help consolidate the core supporters, but I think he will carefully consider how the public opinion of moderate voters will go."
