Yeongyang-gun Holds Countywide Resolution Rally to Support Hosting Pumped Storage Power Plant

The Pan-Citizen Committee for Attracting a Pumped Storage Power Plant to Yeongyang County (hereinafter Pan-Citizen Committee, Standing Chairman Yang Bong-cheol) held a Pan-Citizen Resolution Rally on the 11th to express the will of the county residents who hope to attract the pumped storage power plant of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (hereinafter KHNP), which will become the region's greatest growth engine, both domestically and internationally.

The Pan-Citizen Committee was formed on the 25th of last month, centered on nine major private organizations including the town and township youth associations, senior citizens' associations, and sports associations. Since the 28th of last month, it has been conducting a full-scale pan-citizen signature campaign, and from the 3rd of this month, it has held a week-long series of town and township touring resolution rallies to gather the residents' will for attraction.

The Pan-Citizen Resolution Rally held at the special stage on the covered stream in Yeongyang-eup, in conjunction with the 18th Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival, was attended by Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, and Park Hyung-soo, Member of the National Assembly, who encouraged the event. About 2,000 people, including local institutions, social organizations, residents, hometown visitors, and festival tourists, gathered, making it a great success.

As a pre-event, a pungmul contest, daebuk and modeumbuk performances, and various performances such as making 1,219 servings of wild vegetable bibimbap to pray for the attraction and releasing hope balloons, which marked the finale of the rally, created a festival-style harmonious resolution rally that residents could enjoy together, captivating even the hearts of tourists.

Also, when the heartfelt appeals of the county representatives were read aloud and the slogans urging the attraction of the pumped storage power plant echoed throughout the venue, the rally was filled with expectations and hopes for Yeongyang's happy transformation.

In particular, Yang Bong-cheol, Standing Chairman of the Pan-Citizen Committee, emphasized while reading the resolution, "The construction project of the pumped storage power plant is expected to become a new growth engine for the Yeongyang region, and the 16,000 residents strongly urge the construction of the pumped storage power plant in Yeongyang County."

County Governor Oh Do-chang stated that he would make every effort to ensure resident acceptance by continuing to promote the necessity of attracting the pumped storage power plant to the residents through ongoing campaigns and signature drives conducted jointly by the public and private sectors.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy finalized the 10th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand (2022?2036) on January 12 of this year. In accordance with this plan, KHNP has completed the selection of preliminary candidate sites after reviewing environmental factors, technology, and site suitability.

A KHNP official stated that although the site selection stage is still ongoing, Yeongyang County has excellent conditions across various sectors during the preliminary survey process, making it highly likely to be included as a preliminary candidate site.

In the case of Yeongyang County, the facility with a capacity of 1,000 MW and a national budget of 2 trillion KRW is planned to be constructed in the Yonghwa 1-ri area of Ilwol-myeon, Yeongyang County. The specific detailed project scale will be finalized after a preliminary feasibility study.

Especially since the voluntary willingness of the residents is a decisive criterion for the selection of the pumped storage power plant, Yeongyang County plans to focus on securing resident acceptance until the final site is confirmed by promoting the importance and necessity of the project centered on the Pan-Citizen Committee.
