Washing machines that clean laundry well and air conditioners with excellent cooling functions can no longer captivate consumers. It is an era where artificial intelligence (AI) technology determines the competitiveness of home appliances.

Since launching the first AI and Internet of Things (IoT) integrated refrigerator in Korea in 2016, Samsung Electronics has incorporated AI features into various home appliances. This year, AI functions have been added to vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, and ovens, increasing the total number of AI-applied products to 15.


The new Bespoke Grande AI washer and dryer feature an 'AI Auto Detergent Dispenser' function. It adjusts the amount of detergent based not only on the weight of the laundry but also on the contamination level of recently washed laundry. The 'Detergent Barcode Scan' function and the selectable detergent compartment allow the optimal amount of detergent to be used for each detergent type. Using the 'AI Saving Mode,' the washing machine can save up to 60% energy, and the dryer up to 35%.


AI technology has also been applied to refrigerators. By analyzing refrigerator usage patterns and optimizing operation through AI technology, energy savings of up to 10% can be achieved at level 1, and an additional 5% can be saved by users adjusting the freezer temperature at level 2. The new vacuum cleaner ‘Bespoke Jet AI’ offers the world’s highest suction power of 280 watts (W) and features an ‘AI Mode’ that recognizes floor conditions such as carpet, wood, and mats, as well as situations where the brush lifts off the floor during movement. Utilizing AI technology, it optimizes suction power autonomously and improves battery usage efficiency.


When a phone rings during cleaning, a service that notifies incoming calls on the display and pauses operation will be available in the first half of the year. The robot vacuum cleaner ‘Jet Bot AI’ recognizes not only people but also dogs and cats. When away from home, users can monitor the status of their pets through the camera installed on the Jet Bot AI and play YouTube channels or music via the TV.

The AirDresser supports the 'AI Customized Drying' function, which sets the optimal drying time for each garment. It also applies ▲ 'AI Habit Memory,' which displays frequently used patterns at the top, ▲ 'AI Customized Recommendation,' which suggests various courses based on usage time, weather, and season, and ▲ 'AI Course Linkage,' which proposes the optimal AirDresser drying course by linking with the washing machine through SmartThings.

LG Electronics has equipped its premium TV 'OLED Evo' with the industry's first AI picture and sound engine, the Alpha9 Processor 6th generation. The AI processor, trained on one million data points, analyzes the video creator’s intent to adjust the screen and recognizes faces, objects, text, and backgrounds within scenes. Notably, the brightness enhancement technology based on Alpha9 controls not only pixel brightness but also the angle of light.

Washing and drying appliances achieved the world’s first ‘UL Deep Learning AI Certification’ last year. They were recognized by the global safety science company UL for the excellence of the deep learning AI technology applied to Tromm washing and drying appliances. Using deep learning to recognize fabric materials, LG Electronics selects the optimal motion among its six unique washing and drying methods to minimize fabric damage. The dryer also determines drying time and optimal operation based on fabric type.


Air conditioners can operate autonomously according to indoor conditions.


The 2023 LG Whisen Tower Air Conditioner, equipped with AI technology, provides ▲ rapid cooling when hot ▲ comfortable cooling when cooled down ▲ energy saving when comfortable cooling is maintained ▲ air purification when air quality is poor ▲ and automatically activates the dehumidification function if indoor humidity remains above 70% for 10 minutes during operation. Additionally, the LG Whisen Portable Air Conditioner features an automatic drying function that sets optimal drying conditions to remove internal moisture. AI technology is also applied to air purifiers for energy saving. When indoor air quality remains ‘Good’ for 5 to 10 minutes, the internal fan turns off and the display brightness lowers, operating at minimum power consumption. When air quality changes to ‘Poor,’ it automatically switches to normal mode.


Meanwhile, to advance home appliance evolution, LG Electronics AI Research Center has prioritized building an 'Ambient Computing' platform as a core strategic task this year. ‘Ambient Computing’ refers to an intelligent solution where AI recognizes and judges the user’s situation and condition without manual operation, proposing or performing specific tasks accordingly.
