Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital announced on the 8th that Professor Byoo Gyun, from the Department of Oncology, received the Grand Prize at the ‘2023 Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO) Liver Cancer Academic Award’.
The award ceremony, hosted by the Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO) and sponsored by Korea Eisai, will take place at the KSMO Annual General Meeting on the 19th at Lotte Hotel Seoul.
Professor Byoo was recognized for his research achievements in the paper titled “A Phase I Study of Locoregional High-Dose Autologous Natural Killer Cell Therapy With Hepatic Arterial Infusion Chemotherapy in Patients With Locally Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma.”
His paper was published in the June 2022 issue of the SCI international journal Frontiers in Immunology.
This study, a Phase I clinical trial conducted by Professor Byoo and the research team at Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital, aimed to improve treatment response rates and survival periods in patients with difficult-to-treat liver cancer by combining chemotherapy and natural killer (NK) cell therapy. Following this, a Phase II clinical trial is currently underway at multiple centers, including Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital.
Professor Byoo stated, “I believe this award is the result of the collective efforts of many researchers at Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital. In particular, it was successfully achieved thanks to the collaboration of Professor Lee Jejoong from Hematology, Professor Lee Byungchan from Radiology, Professor Ko Yangseok from Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, and Professor Cho Seongbeom from Gastroenterology. I would also like to thank all the patients who participated in the study, and I will continue to strive to provide even more help to patients visiting Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital through further research.”
