Sacheon-si, Rapid Response Forest Disaster Forest Road Project Promotion

Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province is set to actively promote the ‘2023 Forest Road Project’ to enhance the efficiency of forest management and operations and to respond swiftly to forest disasters such as wildfires.

According to Sacheon City, with a project budget of 870 million KRW this year, the city plans to carry out a 2.1 km forest road project across three locations: from Gaekbangi in Jeongdong-myeon to Sogok-ri, and in Songnim-ri, Gonmyeong-myeon, aiming to complete it by October.

This forest road project was finalized after a feasibility evaluation of the proposed new forest road sites by a committee composed of experts in forest civil engineering and environmental fields operated by Gyeongnam Province, along with representatives of local residents.

Additionally, structural improvement projects will be undertaken on forest roads within the region where road surfaces have deteriorated, posing risks of damage during heavy rains or requiring expansion of drainage pipes. Repairs will include reinforcement of cut and fill slopes and installation of retaining walls to prevent collapse.

Forest roads are essential facilities for transporting materials, forest products, and equipment related to afforestation, forest tending, and forest product cultivation, as well as for rapid response in case of forestry management needs and forest disasters such as wildfires.

A city official stated, “We currently manage approximately 132 km of forest roads across 38 sections. We plan to continuously expand forest roads not only to support forestry management for forest workers but also to consider the convenience of local residents.”
