The Yongin Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 25th that they have booked and are investigating Mr. A, the head of the KCTU Courier Workers' Union Gyeonggi Branch, on charges of assault without detention.
Mr. A is accused of pushing and hitting employees of Coupang Logistics Service (CLS), a logistics and delivery subsidiary of Coupang, in front of the Coupang delivery camp in Suji-gu, Yongin City, at around 9:15 p.m. on the 24th.
Earlier that day, the Courier Workers' Union held simultaneous branch founding ceremonies for CLS in three locations: Gangnam in Seoul, Bundang in Seongnam, and Ilsan.
After the founding ceremonies, Mr. A, accompanied by union members, visited the Coupang delivery camp in Yongin City and attempted to enter the camp. When CLS employees blocked the entry, he reportedly assaulted some of them.
It was reported that Mr. A verbally abused CLS employees blocking the camp’s main gate, applied a headlock to one employee trying to stop him, grabbed him by the collar, and threw him down, committing assault.
Due to the union’s attempt to enter and the assault, delivery operations at the CLS Yongin camp were suspended, causing disruptions in handling delivery volumes, with some shipments being redirected to other camps.
The Courier Workers' Union has been spotlighted in the past for aggressive acts including verbal abuse and assault. Earlier this year, 81 union executives involved in the illegal occupation and strike at CJ Logistics were referred to the prosecution.
A CLS representative stated, “If the Courier Workers' Union continues illegal acts holding customers hostage, CLS will respond strongly with all legal measures.”
