As President Yoon Suk-yeol embarks on his trip to the United States, the ruling party is united in defending against opposition attacks related to his visit. The party leadership and lawmakers launched a barrage of criticism against Democratic Party lawmaker Yang Yi-won-young, who made a verbal slip regarding the 'Netflix' investment, calling it the "Democratic Party's dark intentions." This is to prevent the opposition's attacks from overshadowing the achievements of the trip.
On the 25th, Kim Byung-min, a Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, shared a screenshot of a post deleted by Yang Yi-won-young on his social media, saying, "Yang Yi-won-young has made an unprecedented blunder."
Earlier, Yang Yi-won-young had raised concerns on her social media, saying, "There is news that President Yoon is going to invest 3.3 trillion won in Netflix. Why invest?" However, she realized she had misunderstood the news and deleted the post. She had reversed the meaning of the article that "Netflix is going to invest 3.3 trillion won in Korea." Nevertheless, her post was captured before deletion, reported in the media, and shared across various online communities.
Supreme Council member Kim pointed out, "Perhaps displeased with Korea's success, Yang Yi-won-young posted on Facebook as shown in the photo below," adding, "While the post can be deleted, it seems the Democratic Party's dark intention to throw a wrench into the president's overseas trip cannot be erased."
He added, "No matter how much they are the opposition, I hope they conduct politics based on facts befitting the dignity of a lawmaker," and said, "If the opposition spends the entire presidential overseas trip looking for faults, they prove themselves unqualified to discuss national interests."
Jang Ye-chan, a youth Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, also shared Yang Yi-won-young's post, saying, "It seems Democratic politicians are praying for no achievements from the Korea-US summit and the state visit to the US," and added, "The Democratic Party's priorities of political strife over national interest were revealed through Yang Yi-won-young. Beyond political evaluation, their level is so low it is embarrassing for the public to see."
People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Byung-gil said, "Failing to distinguish even basic facts that elementary school students can easily understand, and blindly disparaging and opposing anything done by the Yoon Suk-yeol government is the true face of the Democratic Party's 'mindless opposition,'" adding, "There is no intelligence, no people, and no national interest in the Democratic Party's criticism. There is only political strife."
The People Power Party's unified criticism of Yang Yi-won-young's remarks can be interpreted as an effort to defend against opposition attacks on President Yoon's trip while highlighting its achievements to recover approval ratings. President Yoon has often provided the opposition with opportunities to attack due to frequent verbal slips during overseas trips, and these trips have not translated into rising approval ratings, becoming a "sore spot" for the government and ruling party. This time, President Yoon has sparked controversy with remarks related to the "Japan knee" during an interview with The Washington Post (WP).
