Songpa-gu Invites 200 Students with Developmental Disabilities to Musical ‘Yi Sun-sin’s Sea’ and Cultural Experience Events Including Foot Washing Ceremony

On the 20th, Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, drew attention by participating in a foot washing ceremony for 12 students with developmental disabilities at the 43rd Disability Day commemorative ceremony.
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) commemorated the 43rd Disability Day by inviting 200 students with developmental disabilities attending special schools in Seoul to enjoy a special day with a musical performance, orchestra viewing, and a foot washing ceremony.
The event, hosted and organized by the ‘1.2 Step Committee,’ was supported by SK Innovation, Woori Bank, and Yebit Art. These companies generously donated funds to support special cultural experiences in honor of Disability Day.
Musical Company A was responsible for producing the musical ‘Yi Sun-sin’s Sea.’ SK Innovation, Woori Bank, and Yebit Art donated the Dream Shoes used in the foot washing ceremony and sponsored the performance and promotional expenses.
The day’s program included ▲ the original musical ‘Yi Sun-sin’s Sea,’ ▲ a performance by the ‘Einsbaum Orchestra Team,’ which features collaboration between disabled and non-disabled musicians, and ▲ a singing performance by students from Dongtan Yedang Elementary School.
Notably, Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, participated in the event’s highlight, the ‘foot washing ceremony.’
Mayor Seo, embodying a humble attitude to serve the residents, personally washed the feet of 12 students with developmental disabilities who have particular difficulties with their feet, together with donation angels.
He also helped them put on specially made corrective custom shoes called ‘Dream Shoes.’
Lee Gap-yong, President of the Seoul Developmental Disabilities Association, representing the participants, said, “The wonderful performances, including the musical we watched today, brought great comfort to the hearts of people with disabilities. We thank Songpa-gu and the sponsoring companies SK Innovation, Woori Bank, and Yebit Art for providing such an opportunity.”
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “We will improve and correct everything from small to large matters to create a barrier-free society with no discrimination between disabled and non-disabled people. Going forward, the district will conduct regular surveys to understand the needs of people with disabilities and reflect the results in district administration.”

‘Dobong, Connected by People’ Sixth Story... Disability Day Commemorative Event Held on April 20
After Ceremony, Welfare Expo Booths for Promotion, Human Rights, and Experience Operated on Lawn Plaza in Front of Dobong-gu Office
The Disability Day Commemorative Event Promotion Committee of Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) held the ‘Dobong, Saida (Connected by People)’ event on April 20 to commemorate the 43rd Disability Day.
Co-hosted and organized by about 40 disability organizations in Dobong-gu, this annual event held every April 20 aims to promote understanding of disabilities, encourage rehabilitation motivation among people with disabilities, and improve disability welfare through cooperation with related organizations and institutions in the region.
The event took place in the Seoninbong Hall on the 2nd floor of Dobong-gu Office and included awards for contributors to disability welfare, reading of the Disability Human Rights Charter, and a performance by the sign language club ‘Visible Sound.’
In particular, Mayor Oh Eon-seok and the sign language club ‘Visible Sound’ gave a sign language performance that deeply moved attendees. Mayor Oh is known to have made great efforts preparing for the performance, even learning sign language himself after work to show the breaking down of barriers between disabled and non-disabled people and unity.
Following the ceremony, a disability welfare expo was held on the lawn plaza in front of Dobong-gu Office, featuring various promotional, experiential, and sales booths. The expo promoted disability welfare projects by local disability organizations and welfare institutions and aimed to improve residents’ awareness of disabilities.
From April 13 to April 20, the district also created a harmonious space for residents to participate in Disability Day by holding commemorative events in cooperation with about 20 local cafes.
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “For communication with people with disabilities, a desirable social perception and consideration are important. The district will continue to create various opportunities for meetings, including this commemorative event, to break down barriers and enable communication between disabled and non-disabled people.”
The Disability Day commemorative ceremony of the Dobong-gu Physical Disability Association was separately held at 2 p.m. on the same day at the Dobong-gu Residents’ Hall.
