Sweeping Various Competitions, Establishing as a Prestigious House of Korean Ssireum
The Yeongam County Folk Ssireum Team affiliated with Yeongam County Office in Jeollanam-do (coach Kim Ki-tae) has once again promoted Yeongam and folk ssireum through an entertainment show appearance.
According to the county on the 19th, the TV program ‘Cheonhajeil Jangsa’ is a sports entertainment show where entertainers and athletes with athletic talent are divided into teams to compete in a one-on-one match through Korea’s traditional martial art, ‘ssireum’.
After successfully concluding Season 1 amid much attention last year, Season 2 was produced three months later, with coach Kim Ki-tae joining as a commentator, and champions Choi Jeong-man and Choi Young-won joining as coaches for the wrestling and martial arts teams respectively. The show is currently airing with great popularity.
Yeongam County, which fired the starting shot for the revival of ssireum through the successful hosting of the 2023 Seollal Jangsa Ssireum Tournament, has established itself as a representative stronghold of Korean ssireum by sweeping various competitions. With the addition of exciting production in this broadcast, it is expected to convey a more friendly image of the county.
Since its founding in 2017, the Yeongam County Folk Ssireum Team has recorded a total of 70 wins (58 championships, 4 gold medals at the National Sports Festival, and 8 team event victories), making it the top ssireum team in Korea. Through appearances on various entertainment programs, it has also succeeded in capturing the home audience, making it the most popular and talented team in the ssireum world.
Coach Kim Ki-tae stated, “I take great pride in promoting ssireum and our local area, Yeongam,” and added, “Whether in the arena or on set, I will do my best and enjoy the activities.”
