Microsoft (MS), which is focusing all efforts on developing products integrated with generative AI, is reportedly developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip.
On the 18th (local time), major foreign media outlets, citing tech specialist media The Information, reported that MS has been developing AI chips since 2019 and is testing these chips within a small group formed with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
The chip MS is developing is used to process vast amounts of data for generative AI like ChatGPT, supporting the training and inference of language models that ask and answer like humans.
MS is expanding its market by launching new products such as the search engine Bing, equipped with the generative AI 'ChatGPT.' However, unlike Amazon and Google, which have developed large language models (LLM) using their own AI chips, MS has been deploying ChatGPT through collaboration with OpenAI.
Major foreign media reported that MS’s AI chip, developed in-house, is expected to outperform externally supplied chips, saving time and costs involved in AI development.
Currently, the AI chip market is mostly dominated by the U.S. semiconductor company Nvidia. Nvidia’s latest chips were used in more than 10,000 units for OpenAI’s latest large language model GPT-4.
