Classical Music Meets Dance and Media Art... Lotte Concert Hall 'In House Artists' Jin-Sang Lee & So-Young Yoon

Pianist Lee Jinsang and Violinist Yoon Soyoung
Present Media Art Collaboration Performances in Three Shows

"For classical musicians, collaboration with artists from other fields is rare, so I have always dreamed of such projects. It is new for the audience and also a new challenge for me, so I have high expectations." (Pianist Lee Jinsang)

"I have never performed on a media art stage before, so I still find it hard to imagine. However, I chose Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' and Max Richter's 'Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi ? The Four Seasons' to be presented in June because I think they will suit media art well." (Violinist Yoon Soyoung)

Pianist Lee Jinsang (42) and violinist Yoon Soyoung (39), selected as this year's 'In-House Artists' at Lotte Concert Hall, shared their thoughts ahead of their performances at a press conference held on the 18th at Lotte Concert Hall in Songpa-gu, Seoul.

At the conference, the two performers explained their upcoming concert plans scheduled for the 22nd (Lee Jinsang), June 23rd (Yoon Soyoung), and November 29th (Lee Jinsang and Yoon Soyoung). They will present new stages combining music and media art through collaboration with creative director Cha Jinyeop and contemporary artist Hwang Seonjeong.

Pianist Lee Jinsang gained recognition as the first Asian to win the G?za Anda Competition. Violinist Yoon Soyoung attracted attention after becoming the first Korean to win the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition. Under the theme 'In-House Artist Series meets Media Art,' the two musicians personally planned the stage concept and program, showcasing their distinct colors on stage.

In the concert on the 22nd, Lee Jinsang will perform Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique' in a piano and percussion version. The first piece of the concert will be Liszt's 'St. Cecilia Mass.' When composing this piece, Liszt is known to have been inspired by Gregorio Allegri's (1582-1652) 'Miserere' and Mozart's 'Ave Verum Corpus,' blending these two works into his composition. The performance will combine dance and media art to convey a unique emotional atmosphere to the audience.

Regarding his choice of Berlioz, Lee Jinsang explained, "It is a piece suitable for expressing emotions, narrative, and all inner human characteristics. It depicts a wide range of human emotions and the process of falling in love, which is why I chose it." He added, "Liszt's St. Cecilia Mass also contains important human emotions as it is about salvation and consolation from evil, so I selected it."

Yoon Soyoung will present Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' and Richter's 'Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi ? The Four Seasons' on June 23rd. Through Max Richter's newly arranged 'Recomposed' version, released in 2012, she will demonstrate her expertise as a 'specialist of The Four Seasons.' The concert will also feature media art created by director Cha Jinyeop.

Yoon Soyoung said, "Everyone knows Vivaldi's Four Seasons, but Richter's arrangement feels like a blank canvas. When I first heard this piece live, it felt a bit tedious, but since I chose these two pieces so the audience can compare them, I hope they will enjoy it."

Choreographer Cha Jinyeop, who is working on the project, emphasized, "Although there are spatial limitations in the concert hall, I will present stage direction that utilizes the space as three-dimensionally as possible." Artist Hwang Seonjeong stated, "We aim to express synesthetic elements beyond the flat plane. Through generative art that produces spontaneous results in real time without fixed flow, we will create a space where the realm of fantasy expands."
