‘Former Gangster’ Ex-Indian Lawmaker Shot Dead During TV Interview...

Three Suspects Arrested at the Scene

Atiq Ahmed, a former member of the Indian federal parliament's lower house and a former gangster, was shot dead during a live TV broadcast.


According to foreign media on the 16th, Ahmed was shot by assailants while being transported to a hospital with his brother Khalid Azim in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, the previous day.

At the time, he was in a live interview with several TV media outlets, accompanied by about 10 police officers. The assailants fired about 10 shots at Ahmed and Azim over approximately 20 seconds. Ahmed and Azim died, and several police officers and journalists were injured.


The police arrested three suspects at the scene. Ahmed served as a state legislator from the late 1980s to the early 2000s and was a member of the federal parliament's lower house from 2004 to 2009.
