12.8 Trillion Won Investment
Development of 18㎢ Advanced Industry on Reclaimed Land
The special law for the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, a key project that will determine the future 50 years of Daegu, was finally passed at the National Assembly plenary session on the 13th.
In August 2022, Rep. Joo Ho-young of the People Power Party officially proposed the TK Integrated New Airport Special Act, which passed the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee on March 22.
The TK New Airport Special Act includes provisions such as national government support for the difference between donation and transfer of military airports, exemption from preliminary feasibility studies for the new airport construction project, and designation of special zones for the previous sites.
The TK New Airport is planned to open in 2030 and will be constructed in Sobomyeon, Gunwi-gun and Bianmyeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongbuk. The surrounding areas will be developed into advanced logistics and industrial complexes and eco-friendly air cities. The previous airport site of 18.77㎢, from which the airport will be relocated, will be developed into a 24-hour non-stop Dubai-style city focused on advanced industries, tourism, and commerce.
Through this, Daegu’s industrial structure will shift to focus on five advanced new industries such as UAM and ABB, and transportation infrastructure connecting railways and urban air mobility (UAM) with the airport will be established, forming a super-regional economic zone centered on the new airport.
The relocation of the TK New Airport is expected to cost a total of 12.8 trillion KRW, including 11.4 trillion KRW for the military airport relocation and 1.4 trillion KRW for the civilian airport relocation.
Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, said, “The passage of the TK New Airport Special Act is thanks to the support of 5 million citizens of Daegu and Gyeongbuk,” adding, “We plan to complete the advanced logistics passenger airport in the central and southern regions by 2030 to secure momentum for regional growth through attracting large corporations and creating jobs.”
Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “For the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport to be a game changer that overcomes the crisis of local extinction and opens a true local era, the development of the hinterland complex is as important as the airport construction,” and added, “We will make thorough preparations to start the construction of the airport new city immediately after the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s preliminary feasibility study.”
