Automated Production Line and Advanced R&D Facility Operating Near Vancouver
Expectations for Securing Large-Scale Eco-Friendly Raw Material Production Capacity
Cosmetics platform company CTK announced on the 13th that its subsidiary CTK Bio Canada successfully held the official opening of its eco-friendly plastic manufacturing and research facility on the 6th.
The facility is located in Surrey, near the city of Vancouver, covering approximately 11,000 square feet. It is expected to become a core facility that secures mass production capabilities of eco-friendly raw materials that are 100% Home Compositable (biodegradable and compostable in natural conditions) through an automated eco-friendly raw material manufacturing line and advanced research and development facilities, while continuously researching and developing high value-added materials.
Key figures attended the event, including Brenda Locke, Mayor of Surrey, city council members, Korean Consul General Kyun Jong-ho, and representatives from KOTRA Vancouver Trade Center. Starting with official greetings from Mayor Locke and JK Park, CEO of Bio Canada, attendees toured the automated manufacturing line and R&D facilities. Expectations for full-scale commercialization were high, with product and raw material introductions and sharing of the latest market information.
According to a CTK Bio Canada official, "Through the opening ceremony, we exchanged opinions with the Canadian government and the City of Surrey regarding future development directions and objectives," and "we received a promise of active support." They added, "The eco-friendly plastic business is a matter where active support at the national level is very important, rather than the role of a single company or individual," and "with a mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable materials, we plan to fully commercialize biodegradable and compostable materials excluding PLA and expand supply to various industries."
CTK Bio Canada has developed biodegradable plastics that decompose naturally in soil or marine environments through reactions with oxygen, heat, light, and enzymes, as alternatives to non-degradable plastics, applying them to various products such as disposable items and cosmetic containers. Recently, they successfully produced industrial pallet covers meeting the 100% Home Compositable standard through a partnership with NLC Energy.
They are actively engaged in commercialization efforts, including developing various fresh agricultural product packaging materials in collaboration with Star Group, a fresh food distributor in Western Canada. Additionally, they are in discussions for product development and supply contracts with more than ten companies across North America, Europe, and Asia.
JK Park, CEO of CTK Bio Canada, stated at the event, "The essence of our business is producing eco-friendly plastic raw materials that decompose naturally, not inefficient methods that incur costs for microplastic issues and future disposal," and "we expect to fundamentally solve the plastic-related concerns of developed countries."
He continued, "Building on active collaboration and support from the Canadian government and the city, we will focus on expanding into various industries and increasing sales through rapid business development," adding, "we plan to develop innovative new technologies in line with the demand for eco-friendly plastics."
Mayor Brenda Locke said in her congratulatory speech, "I am pleased to learn how eco-friendly CTK's bioplastics are," and "using 100% biodegradable materials in numerous consumer products will be a significant step toward reducing plastic waste and improving the environment."
CTK Bio Canada's eco-friendly raw materials and products do not use PLA components and are 100% naturally decomposable in natural conditions. They can be disposed of with general waste, requiring no recycling and incurring no additional processing costs.
