Muan County Council Condemns 'Gwangju Military Airport Relocation Remarks'

Chairman Kim Kyung-hyun: "The Ministry of National Defense and Gwangju Relocation Plan Must Be Immediately Halted"

The Muan County Council (Chairman Kim Kyung-hyun) attended the Gwangju Combat Airfield Muan Relocation Opposition Pan-Citizen Rally held in front of the Jeonnam Provincial Office on the 7th.

The rally, organized by the Gwangju Combat Airfield Muan Relocation Opposition Pan-Citizen Countermeasures Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Committee), was attended by about 1,000 residents and social organizations such as the Village Chiefs Association, who raised their voices in strong opposition to the relocation of the Gwangju Combat Airfield to Muan.

On that day, Chairman Kim Kyung-hyun stated in his condemnation speech, “The Ministry of National Defense and Gwangju City, who are pushing forward with the relocation of the combat airfield while ignoring the opinions of our local Muan residents, must immediately apologize to the people of Muan and immediately halt the relocation plan to Muan.” He added, “The Muan County Council strongly opposes the relocation of the Gwangju Combat Airfield to Muan under any circumstances and will join the 100,000 residents in action to block the relocation.”

Lee Ho-sung, Chairman of the Muan County Council’s Special Committee Against the Gwangju Military Airport Relocation, appealed, “The future of Muan looks toward its 100,000 residents and is on the verge of city status. We must resolutely block the relocation to Muan and stop it until the end.”

Following this, Muan County Council Vice Chairman Lim Dong-hyun and Committee member Kim Sung-hee stated in the resolution, “Until now, the residents of Muan have fought alone. Going forward, our Muan residents will unite even more tightly to lead the development of Muan County and oppose the relocation of the Gwangju Combat Airfield, protecting our peaceful daily lives.”

Meanwhile, on the 28th of last month, Lee Ho-sung, Chairman of the Muan County Council’s Special Committee Against the Gwangju Military Airport Relocation, and Vice Chairman Lim Dong-hyun carried out a head-shaving protest demanding an apology from Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok for his remarks on the ‘Gwangju Military Airport Relocation.’
