Drone Infiltrates National Event... Police SWAT Team Shoots Down with 'Jamming' Operation(?)

2030 World Expo Inspection Team Welcomed with Fireworks Show

Busan Police Detect Unauthorized Drone and Fire 'Jamming Gun'

When a drone intruder infiltrated a major national event venue, the police launched an operation to forcibly expel it.

According to the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency on the 7th, at around 8:50 p.m. on the 6th, during a fireworks show welcoming the inspection team for the ‘2030 World Expo’ over Gwangalli Beach in Nam-gu, Busan, counter-terrorism officers from the Busan Police Agency discovered a drone flying over the event venue without approval.

The police special forces drone response team immediately initiated a signal jamming operation.

The police first fired a ‘jamming gun’ to block the drone’s signal flying over the beach. The drone, cut off from control by the operator, drifted over the night sea on the wind and gradually lost power as it fell toward the Gwangalli Beach road.

The police apprehended a man in his 30s who came to retrieve his drone and reported him to the Busan Regional Aviation Administration.

Under the Aviation Safety Act, this man will be fined for violating operator compliance rules (unauthorized flight, night flight ban). If this is his first offense, the fine is 1.5 million KRW; 2nd offense, 2.25 million KRW; and 3rd offense, 3 million KRW.

The Busan Police Special Forces have been operating the jamming gun since March 2018.
