As demand for overseas travel revives, more travelers are seeking to increase satisfaction at relatively affordable prices. On the 7th, global online travel agency (OTA) Agoda analyzed the average daily room rates this month, focusing on Asia and Oceania ahead of the golden holiday season, and revealed the top 10 travel destinations with the best value-for-money (performance relative to price) accommodations. Accommodation prices in Southeast Asian regions such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia were generally inexpensive, and among domestic travel destinations, Gwangju Metropolitan City’s room rates ranked within the top 10.
The number one lowest-priced accommodation destination in the Asia-Pacific region recommended by Agoda is Khon Kaen, Thailand. The average daily room rate was recorded at 39,500 KRW. Khon Kaen is famous as the city where dinosaur fossils were discovered. Key attractions include visiting the dinosaur fossil excavation site and the Wat Tham Saeng Tham temple atop a beautiful hill. At Ton Tannya Market, visitors can enjoy numerous street food stalls and live music performances.
The second cheapest accommodation is in Sibu, Malaysia, with an average daily rate of about 45,000 KRW. Located in Sarawak on the island of Borneo, Sibu is attractive for its food, cultural heritage, and beautiful nature. Visitors can glimpse ancient traditions at the Tua Pek Kong Temple. From traditional coffee shops called kopitiam to the Sibu night market, a variety of local foods can be tasted.
Surakarta, Indonesia, ranked third with an average daily room rate of about 49,000 KRW. Known as Solo, this place is gaining attention as the birthplace of Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Highlights include the Solo Traditional Dance Festival held on April 29 and the traditional music festival in July.
Puri, India, has an average daily room rate of about 50,000 KRW. It is one of India’s four sacred sites and the oldest city in the country. Throughout the year, it attracts devotees, history enthusiasts, and adventure-seeking travelers. In Puri, key local foods include the Indian dessert Malpua and the spicy coconut shrimp curry dish called Chingdi Malai.
Ranked fifth is Bacolod, Philippines, with an average daily room rate of about 62,000 KRW. Kansi, a traditional dish from the Negros region where Bacolod is located and considered a healing food, is a popular menu item. It is a soup made from beef shank and bone marrow. Chicken Inasal, known for its distinctive smoky flavor, is also famous and can be found in the restaurant streets. Sixth-ranked Ninh Binh, Vietnam, also has an average daily room rate of about 62,000 KRW. It is located one hour from Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It gained fame as a filming location for the blockbuster movie "Kong." Recently, the Hang Mua climbing course, known as the "Great Wall of Vietnam," has attracted travelers’ interest.
In Japan, Chiba ranked within the list with an average daily room rate of 90,800 KRW. Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea are located in Chiba Prefecture. Chiba City, the capital of Chiba Prefecture, is an entertainment hub. Attractions include Makuhari Seaside Park and the nearby shopping center Aeon Mall Makuhari Shintoshin.
Domestically, Gwangju recorded the best value-for-money with an average daily room rate of 119,800 KRW. The cultural and artistic city of Gwangju offers sights such as Art Street, the National Asian Culture Complex, and the Gwangju Museum of Art, along with numerous galleries and antique shops. From today until July 9, the 14th Gwangju Biennale, Asia’s largest biennial art event, is being held.
Ninth is Kinmen Island, Taiwan, with an average daily room rate of 123,700 KRW. It boasts outstanding coastal scenery. Additionally, Brisbane, Australia, ranked tenth with an average daily room rate of 165,900 KRW. Brisbane features beautiful botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuaries, as well as easily accessible daytime markets, shops, cafes, bars, and a beautiful artificial riverside beach.
