HydroLithium announced on the 6th that it has acquired the license to implement the technology necessary for manufacturing ultra-high-purity lithium hydroxide for secondary batteries.
The technology license acquired this time is for a patented technology (CULH) held by Dr. Jeon Woong, who recently assumed the position of CEO, which manufactures ultra-high-purity lithium hydroxide for lithium secondary batteries using low-purity lithium carbonate. HydroLithium will be able to use Dr. Jeon Woong's patented technology for the next 20 years.
Additionally, the licensed technology transferred this time is a manufacturing technology for lithium hydroxide monohydrate for lithium secondary batteries that improves the environment using water. It was recently preliminarily certified as a new technology (NET) in the first round of 2023 by the National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The company emphasized that the acquisition of the technology license is even more significant in that it completes the entire value chain of raw materials for secondary batteries together with the three technology licenses acquired by its affiliate UrbanLithium.
UrbanLithium has acquired licenses for a total of three technologies: technology for extracting lithium from brine containing a large amount of impurities (CULX), technology for manufacturing lithium carbonate through advanced lithium refining (CULC), and eco-friendly lithium recovery technology from waste lithium battery materials (CUBLX).
As a result, HydroLithium and UrbanLithium can now perform the entire process from lithium extraction to the manufacture of battery-grade ultra-high-purity lithium hydroxide and recycling of waste batteries. Recently, the two companies confirmed their entry into the Saemangeum Industrial Complex, raising expectations for large-scale domestic production and stable supply of lithium raw materials.
A company representative said, "With the acquisition of this technology license, we can accelerate the mass production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide," adding, "Through collaboration with affiliates such as UrbanLithium, we will do our best to complete the lithium value chain that will be the cornerstone of Korea's lithium secondary battery industry and grow into a global lithium company."
