Decision to Break Off Engagement 3 Months Before Wedding
"Secretly Using Talismans Is a Bit Much" vs "Too Sensitive"
A story of a man who ended up breaking off his engagement due to his superstitious girlfriend and prospective mother-in-law has become a hot topic online on the 5th.
On the 4th, an anonymous office worker posted on the community Blind that he had decided to break off his engagement with his girlfriend of three years.
The author, Mr. A, began by saying, "I really hate fortune-telling and superstitions to an extreme degree," adding, "When I was taking the college entrance exam, my mother even shouted at me not to go to a hundred-day prayer ritual."
On the morning of November 16, last year, one day before the 2023 College Scholastic Ability Test, a teacher at Chuncheon High School in Gangwon was attaching talismans to exam admission tickets and handing them out to students. Mr. A said, "In the early days of dating, my girlfriend wanted to go see a tarot card reader, so I told her not to mention it to me since I don't believe in superstitions," and "There wasn't a big problem while we were dating."
He continued, "After dating for about three years and preparing for marriage, even when setting the wedding date, the bride's side (mother-in-law and bride) talked about how the date would bring fortune or misfortune," adding, "I got angry and told the bride about it, and a few days later, the father-in-law said, 'I can't control my wife, I'm sorry,' and asked me to overlook it just this once. So I told both the father-in-law and the bride that this would really be the last wedding."
He also said, "About three months before the wedding, a close friend's father passed away. Since he was a very close friend, I planned to take leave and stay with him," adding, "I only told the bride that I would be away for a few days, and she told me to have a good trip. After I returned, I got a call from the bride in the evening."
"She said the mother-in-law was angry about the groom going to a funeral and told me to come over, so I got mad and said I wouldn't go home, and we had a bit of an argument," he revealed.
Mr. A went on, "I safely finished the funeral and came home, and a few weeks later, when I was about to wash the bedding, I found a talisman in the pillow," adding, "I called my girlfriend and confronted her, and she said that after the funeral, the mother-in-law told her to put it in because of evil spirits or something. After hearing that, I immediately told my parents about the situation and went to the father-in-law's house to inform them that the marriage could not proceed."
Most netizens sided with Mr. A in response to this story. Comments included, "Setting aside fortune-telling, the bigger problem is that the bride couldn't play a mediating role properly," "If there was a talisman in my pillow, I would break up immediately," "Secretly using talismans is crossing the line," and "Good thing they broke up."
On the other hand, some criticized Mr. A for being overly sensitive, saying, "It could have been overlooked, but the author seems a bit too sensitive," and "I wouldn't think much even if my partner acted like that."
