Today’s focus is the Goyang course. It is a journey following the stories of Janghang Wetland, the largest in the metropolitan area, and Haengju Fortress. Goyang has served as the last stronghold protecting the capital during national crises. Over time, the wetlands, designated as civilian-restricted areas, have become a sanctuary for rare flora and fauna; military fences have turned into family parks; and military barracks are preparing to welcome tourists. Visitors can enjoy nature by taking Subway Line 3. The total length is 29.5 km, with 3.5 km on foot, departing every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

Key stops include Haengju Fortress Historical Park. This park was created on the site where military fences were removed to allow citizens free access. In 2016, an observatory was installed, and a path was developed along the Han River to allow close access to the river’s sandy shore. Inside the park, there are features such as the washing stone head where women gathered to do laundry in the Han River, Haengho Pavilion, and a military fence photo zone.

Haengju Ferry was once a bustling port with boats waiting for tides and fishing vessels. The traditional appearance of Haengju Ferry, loved by ancestors, can be seen in ‘Haenghogwan Eodo,’ a painting by Jeong Seon, a representative Joseon Dynasty artist. Janghang Wetland was off-limits to civilians for a long time due to the establishment of military fences. It was the first inland wetland in Gyeonggi Province to be designated as a Ramsar Wetland. The first floor of the Janghang Wetland Birdwatching Tower houses exhibition and educational facilities, while the second floor is designed for birdwatching. Citizens can study, observe, and experience the wetland firsthand. Historically, the Han River estuary was a critical area for national security as a route for North Korean spies to infiltrate. The ‘Tongilchon Military Barracks’ served as a barracks for soldiers guarding the Han River fence and conducting surveillance operations to prevent spy infiltration through the Han River estuary area.
