5-Day Market Complex Community Center Cultural Space Established
The urban regeneration New Deal project in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do is accelerating, with major hub facilities simultaneously breaking ground.
According to the county on the 3rd, the urban regeneration New Deal project, which began in 2021, is entering its third year and is now fully launching the creation of major hub facilities such as Airang Sarangbang, the Family Masil Complex Community Center, and the Haenam Startup Branding Platform. The major hub facilities are targeted for completion next year.
Airang Sarangbang will be developed as a children's library, study room, and childcare sharing space, while the Haenam Startup Branding Platform will serve as a youth startup space and a collaborative workshop that coexists with nearby stores.
The Haenam Family Masil Complex Community Center will operate as a health center, shared laundry, and village caf? frequented by residents, merchants, and tourists.
In particular, the Family Masil Complex Community Center will expand two buildings?the fish market building and the general goods building?of the Haenam-eup 5-day Market to create a resident cultural space and a merchant coexistence center, transforming it into a new space for culture, communication, and exchange.
The first floor will remodel the existing 5-day Market into a cleaner and more pleasant market space, and on the rooftop connecting the two commercial buildings, green resting areas, play spaces, and tourist photo zones will be created, making it a landmark with attractions and things to enjoy even on non-market days.
The Haenam-gun urban regeneration revitalization project is a large-scale general neighborhood-type urban regeneration project targeting the Godo-ri area of Haenam-eup, scheduled to continue until next year, with a project budget of 14.2 billion KRW.
Under the vision of "Revitalizing the old downtown of Haenam-eup with beautiful markets, streets, and streams, and nurturing a happy living space for children and the community's future," the county plans to utilize traditional markets such as the Haenam-eup 5-day Market and the daily market as regional community, startup, and tourism hubs, create specialized streets, and promote commercial district revitalization and residential environment improvement.
In the first year of the project in 2021, the renovation of 22 dilapidated houses began through the old residential area maintenance support project, and last year, the Ansim Gosatgil project, which improved the pedestrian environment of three alleys around the Namdong-ri office and the 5-day Market in Haenam-eup, was completed.
Additionally, efforts are underway to create a brighter and cleaner street environment through the creation of the "Market Road" commercial street, connecting the main roads of the daily market and the 5-day Market with the streamside.
Along with this, resident capacity-building programs related to urban regeneration are being steadily promoted.
Centered on the Urban Regeneration Support Center, programs such as the Urban Regeneration University for residents and merchants, childcare and shared kitchen programs, market festivals and events, and youth startup programs are operated to continuously promote community recovery led by residents.
Going forward, the county plans to maximize the effects of urban regeneration by organizing village management cooperatives for the maintenance and management of hub facilities created through the urban regeneration New Deal project, revitalization of local communities, and creation of local jobs, encouraging voluntary participation of residents through resident councils and programs such as the Urban Regeneration University.
A county official stated, “Now that the urban regeneration project is on track, we will make every effort to ensure the project serves as a catalyst to restore the functions of the old downtown area of the deteriorated town center. Along with the revival of a vibrant old downtown, we will work together with residents to achieve a distinctive and differentiated urban regeneration unique to our county, revitalizing the local economy.”
