Malaysian Police: "Kim Jong-nam's Family Has Not Visited to Retrieve Belongings for 6 Years"

Malaysian police revealed that the family of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un who was assassinated six years ago, has still not claimed his belongings.

According to the US-based Radio Free Asia (RFA) on the 1st, Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof, Deputy Chief of the Sepang District Police Department in Malaysia, said, "No one has come to claim them so far," adding, "(The handling of the belongings) needs to be discussed with the prosecution."

Deputy Chief Yusof stated that Kim Jong-nam had various currencies, including US dollars, among his belongings, and that there were no laptops or mobile phones among them.

Kim Jong-nam, who was traveling abroad under the alias "Kim Cheol," died in late 2017 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia after being attacked with the chemical weapon VX nerve agent.

At the time, police testified during the trial that they found two mobile phones, a laptop, and cash worth approximately $138,000 (about 190 million KRW) in Kim Jong-nam's bag. Regarding this, Professor Hu Chupyeong of the National University of Malaysia said, "From what I heard, there were many negotiations between Malaysia and North Korea at that time," and added, "When Malaysia handed over the body to North Korea, they likely also handed over the belongings."

In October of last year, Malaysian police announced that if the family did not come forward within six months regarding Kim Jong-nam's belongings, they would be transferred to the Malaysian Ministry of Finance. It is known that Kim Jong-nam's family includes his legal wife Shin Jeong-hee and son Kim Geum-sol, as well as his concubine Lee Hye-kyung and their children Hansol and Solhee.
