Prisoner Hints at Inappropriate Relationship on SNS
Shares Nude Photos and Videos with Male Prisoner
It has caused a stir that female prison officers in UK prisons not only had private relationships with inmates but also assisted their illegal activities.
According to the British daily newspaper The Telegraph on the 30th (local time), at HMP Berwyn prison in North Wales, it was revealed that 18 female staff members had inappropriate relationships with inmates over the six years since its opening.
HMP Berwyn, built in 2017, has a capacity of 2,000 inmates, making it the second largest prison in the UK. This prison is also known for promoting a relaxed atmosphere by providing inmates with PCs, gyms, and outdoor exercise yards.
However, inappropriate misconduct between female staff and inmates was secretly taking place at this prison, and some female staff even hinted at this on social networking services (SNS). The Telegraph also reported that some staff members aided or abetted inmates' illegal activities.
In fact, a 27-year-old female prison officer was found to have had sexual relations over four months with a male inmate serving time for conspiracy to commit robbery, secretly provided him with a mobile phone, and shared nude photos and videos of herself. The officer was sentenced to one year in prison.
Regarding this, the UK Prison Officers' Association argued that such misconduct is not merely an individual issue but stems from structural flaws. A representative of the association explained, "Wages are low, living expenses are high, and the corruption prevention training that prison officers receive is out of touch with reality," adding, "The recruitment process needs to be strengthened."

Another female prison officer was sentenced to eight months in prison for secretly providing a mobile phone to a male inmate and sharing inappropriate videos. Among the 18 problematic female staff members, seven were prison officers and 11 were staff from related agencies such as healthcare.
Earlier, it was revealed through the Freedom of Information Act earlier this month that 36 prison officers were dismissed over the past three years for having inappropriate relationships with inmates in the UK. Among these officers, 31 were female and 5 were male. This number is analyzed to have sharply increased compared to the previous four years, during which 19 officers were dismissed.
