[News Figures] David Chipperfield Designs Office Facilities in Seongsu-dong

'David Chipperfield' is a world-renowned architect from the United Kingdom. In Korea, he is widely known as the architect who designed the Amorepacific headquarters building.

The Amorepacific headquarters features three rooftop gardens inside the building, allowing it to breathe with nature and facilitate communication. In 2019, it received two grand prizes and one excellence award in different categories from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) as the 'World's Best Tall Building.'

Born in 1953, Chipperfield was naturally exposed to architecture through his father, who worked in interior decoration. He studied architecture at Kingston Polytechnic and the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA School) in the UK. After graduation, he worked under Richard Rogers and Norman Foster, two of the three masters of high-tech architecture who designed the Pompidou Centre, which helped him develop his own architectural vision. In 1985, he established 'David Chipperfield Architecture' as an independent practice.

Over nearly 40 years, he has presented more than 100 works across Asia, Europe, and North America, gaining a reputation as a master of remodeling historic public buildings with elegant and modern spatial aesthetics. His works include the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice’s 16th-century San Marco Square, the Neues Museum in Berlin, the Saint Louis Art Museum in the United States, the Inagawa Cemetery Chapel in Japan, the BBC Scotland headquarters, and the renovation of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.

Rowan Moore, an architecture critic for the British newspaper The Guardian, described Chipperfield’s architecture as "serious and solid, not flashy or extreme, but fitting within historical or cultural contexts." In 2023, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, known as the 'Nobel Prize of the world architecture community.'

On the 28th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government passed a plan for a new office building project at the 6th Architecture Committee meeting. The project involves constructing an eight-story underground and 17-story above-ground office facility near Seongsu Station on Seoul Subway Line 2, featuring innovative design. This building will be created through a collaboration between David Chipperfield and Samwoo Architects & Engineers.
